Today marks International Day of Journalists' Solidarity

International Day of Journalists' Solidarity was announced at the fourth congress of international organization of journalists in Bucharest in 1958. According to the members of the Congress, on this day journalists from all countries and publications must demonstrate unity, especially in the protection of their rights. Czechoslovakian journalist, anti-fascist writer Julius Fuchik was executed in Germany on Sept. 8, 1943.

Fuchik became interested in politics already in his youth and in 1921 became one of the founders of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In 1941, Fuchik became a member of the Communist Party. On April 24, 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo with six other members of the liberation movement.

Fuchik became known around the world with his book "Reporting with a noose around the neck" he wrote in the Prague prison. After his death the book was translated into 70 languages of the world, and the day of death of Julius Fucik was observed as the International Day of Solidarity of journalists since 1958.
