A center of the Czech language and culture was opened at Baku Slavonic University on Wednesday.

"In addition to activities on the Czech language, the center plans to conduct various cultural events, celebrating the dates associated with the history and culture, traditions and customs of the Czech Republic, meeting with representatives of the political circle, science and culture of the Czech Republic, thematic talks and lectures," said the ambassador of the Czech Republic Matula Radek to Azerbaijan at the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the rector of Baku Slavonic University, professor Kamal Abdullayev, deputy education minister Elmar Gasimov, foreign ministry spokesman Mammad Aliev, members of the Academic Council of the University, students and guests.
The center was created with the financial support of Czech and Azerbaijani companies, including OHL ZS (Czech construction company involved in laying the Baku-northern border highway), as well as the Azerbaijan Caspian Investment Company.
The ambassador said the center currently has about 100 books, including textbooks in the Czech language, dictionaries and manuals for teachers. The ambassador expressed the hope that this center will help in further development of relations between the two countries.
The Czech center at BSU was opened six months after the embassy of the Czech Republic started activities in Baku. The embassy was officially opened in May. BSU also host centers - Greek, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Polish, Turkish, Russian.
