Fuzuli Alakbarov: "Absence of Azeri migrants question Russia's economic growth"

23 November 2006 [15:29] - TODAY.AZ
"From January, 2007 migrants will not allowed to be engaged in trading in Russia. At times I raised this issue at meetings with international migration officials that a migration agreement should be concluded. Unfortunately, we have no migration agreement with Russia," said Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Azerbaijan (MLSPP), Fuzuli Alakbarov.

He said that a mission was sent to Moscow to deal with the problems of Azerbaijanis living in Russia.

"The delegation is discussing the issue in Moscow. The comprehensive solution to the problem will be discussed next month. I may take part in the discussions as well," he said.

Fuzuli Alakbarov said that the decision of Russia is not only applicable to Azerbaijanis.

"The condition of labor resources and demographic market is undesirable now. Russia's economic growth without Azerbaijani migrants is under question. Russia has an annual demand for one million migrants in order to maintain the economic growth rate at the current level. We will try to defend the rights of our nationals by honoring Russia laws and decisions," he said.

The Ministry doesn't rule out that Russia may fix a quota for migrants engaged in trading.

"The current quota was 40% up to April, but it was reduced to zero later on. Migrants are a very big problem in Russia. But, Russia is doomed to attract migrants gradually," he underscored.
