PABSEC session wraps up

The meeting elected member of the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation Asaf Hajiyev as Vice-President of the General Assembly, and approved the organization's 2007 budget.

Importance of widening cultural ties in the globalizing world, and strengthening protection of cultural monuments in the member states in line with UNESCO Program of safeguarding cultural heritage were highlighted in the speeches made by representatives of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Romania, France Ukraine and Russia. The speakers underlined that strengthening cultural ties between countries and peoples not only bring them closer together, but can play an important role in solving some problems.

Improvement of legal basis for protection of intellectual property was the matter of special discussion at the meeting.

Rotating Presidency of the Assembly was passed to the Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament Georgi Pirinski, who promised to do his best to increase effectiveness of the BSEC's activity within the next six months. He added his country's taking over the presidency of the European Union in 2007 will also further increase in the role of BSEC’s and enhance the organization's international cooperation.

The next session of the General Assembly was scheduled to begin on July 5 of 2007 in Bulgarian capital, Sofia.
