For the first time in the history of Azerbaijani mountaineering, Israfil Ashurlu climbed the third highest peak in the world Kanchenjunga (8.586 meters) in Nepal and placed the Azerbaijani flag at the top, the Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation reported.
The journey of the Azerbaijani climber from the assault camp (7.600 meters) to the top took 12 hours and the way back 8 hours.
Before the last assault, Ashurlu had to spend six nights at 7.600 heights waiting for reasonable weather. A day before reaching the top, he tried to leave out but due to the bitter cold and risk of getting frostbite, he had to stay in the camp, Trend reported.
The current climb is a special project of AYOR (Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia) and Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation (AMF) devoted to prominent Azerbaijani men and women who gave a great contribution in cultural, scientific, social and public activities.
The AMF will organize expeditions of high difficulty in various spots of the planet. Each expedition will be devoted to prominent figures in the history of Azerbaijan.
The expedition to Kanchenjunga, having one of the most difficult climbability, was devoted to the memory of national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev.
