Armenia's "Madrid secrets": the fantasies of official Yerevan

Armenian government together with the country’s government seems to be the worst ever “newsmaker” in the CIS area. Armenian journalists got the latest sensation from Alexander Sargsyan, brother of Armenian president. According to Armenia Today news agency, while passing by the demonstrators protesting against "foreign language schools” outside the parliament, MP Alexander Sargsyan, without thinking twice, showed the protesters a combination of his three fingers.

Of course, this whole scene is a classic indicator of the level of political culture in Armenia. National emotions are running high in Armenia against opening of the foreign language schools in Armenia.

I dare say almost no one really cares about the combination of fingers shown by the parliamentarian anymore, because such behavior has already become common among officials in Armenia.

Not only deputy foreign minister Sharvarsh Kocharian, but also seemingly career diplomat Edward Nalbandian can be quite funny at times, and start to look like characters from a political parody, with all their ridiculous statements.

In his recent speech in the parliament, Nalbadian made quite sensational statements saying that Armenia accepted the Madrid Principles two years ago. It seems in a similar way Armenian Constitutional Court advised to ratify the Zurich protocols. Connoisseurs of the Armenian constitution announced back then that Armenia is obliged neither to study 1915 events nor recognize Turkey’s borders. Later Nalbandian showed knowledge of the Azerbaijan’s laws claiming that military resolution of the Karabakh conflict, as stated in country’s newly-adopted Military Doctrine, contradicts Azerbaijan’s constitution.

Frankly, one expects more professionalism from a dialogue between a minister and MPs. Well, who would ever think to ask Armenian Foreign Minister what Putin has talked with Erdogan and what Robert Gates talked in Baku? It is clear that Armenian Foreign Ministry was not officially informed about the meetings in Baku and the ministry will never disclose intelligence information if it has one. Minister’s claims that “we are not going to debate anything with Turkey” seem to be less convincing while Turkey discusses this issue with Russia and the United States.

It is easy to think of how it was difficult for Nalbandian to answer MPs’ questions. Armenia’s ruling elite is becoming more and more aware that country’s plight gets more frightening each day amid many diplomatic failures.

The fact that Azerbaijan adopted the Military Doctrine right after Gates’ recent visit to the country can be viewed both as coincidence and a deliberate move. By the way, U.S. Defense Secretary did not consider it necessary to pay a "balancing" visit to Armenia. So, Armenian lobby in the United States in Washington is not so omnipotent.

Admittedly, Armenian leadership has increasing fears that Karabakh conflict can actually be solved by military means which would deepen crisis in Armenian economy and encourage emigration further more.

Armenian rulers fail to understand that country’s aggressive policies stand at the root of Armenia’s evils. Armenian parliamentarians have neither determination nor a political will to say it out loud.

In such situation, the foreign minister really has no choice but to reassure MPs that things are actually not as it is presented by pernicious Azerbaijani propaganda and that Armenia can change the borders on a whim ...
