UN Environment Chief urges action at COP29 to combat climate change

28 October 2024 [15:39] - TODAY.AZ

Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), is calling on nations to seize the moment at the upcoming COP29 summit in Baku this November to accelerate efforts against climate change, Azernews reports, citing the UNEP’s 2024 report.

Andersen stated, "I urge every nation: no more hot air. Let COP29 in Baku be a turning point for increased climate action. We must strengthen our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and commit wholeheartedly to the 1.5°C pathway by 2030. The sooner we embrace a low-carbon, sustainable future, the sooner we can save lives, reduce costs, and protect the vital planetary systems that sustain us all."

Her call to action emphasizes the urgency for global cooperation in addressing climate challenges and encourages nations to take decisive steps toward a healthier planet.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, this November. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11 of last year. In just two weeks, Baku will transform into a global hub, welcoming approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests for this critical climate summit.
