Verdi`s Don Carlos to premiere at Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre

Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlos will be the last premiere of the season at the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theatre on June 7.

The main parts of the opera will be played by Azerbaijani honored artists Akram Poladov (Philip II), Farida Mammadova (Elizabeth of Valois) and Sabina Asadova (Princess Eboli).

Don Carlos is a five-act grand opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the dramatic play of “Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien” (Don Carlos, Infante of Spain) by Friedrich Schiller.

It is a tale of love, ambition and intrigue set in 16th-century Spain. Don Carlos falls in love with Elizabeth, daughter of Henry II of France. But his father, King Philip II of Spain, intends to marry her himself to secure a peace treaty.

The play was first premiered at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris, on March 11, 1867.
