Traditional Japanese music sounded in Baku

Traditional Japanese music sounded in performance of “Va-Liga” group amazed the audience at Baku’s International Mugham Center on December 17.

Organized by the Japanese embassy in Azerbaijan and Japan Tobacco International company, the concert was entitled “The Land of the Rising Sun meets the Land of Fire.”

Addressing the event, Japanese Ambassador to Baku Tsuguo Takahashi spoke about the steps taken to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The diplomat said Japan is always interested in expanding relations with Azerbaijan, emphasizing that such events will contribute to strengthening of cultural relations.

The group presented a wide range of performance, playing in stringed (tsugaru-jamisen) and wind (shakuhachi) instruments and playing their folk song “minyo,” similar to Azerbaijani Mugham.

Azerbaijan’s mugham singers also performed at the event, creating a beautiful synthesis of music of the two cultures.

So far the group has gave 300 concerts throughout the world, performing in different genres of Japan music.
