European Movie Festival in Baku: FREE tickets, movie schedule + movie list - PHOTOS

The Delegation of the European Union (EU), Embassies of the European Union member-states represented in Azerbaijan jointly with “Park Cinema” are pleased to announce launch of the European Movie Festival 2011.
The Delegation of the European Union (EU), Embassies of the European Union member-states represented in Azerbaijan jointly with “Park Cinema” are pleased to announce launch of the European Movie Festival 2011.

The Festival will run from 6 to 10 October in Baku (capital of Azerbaijan) and will not only present modern European movies but also host world renowned European film directors and actors.

Program includes screening of 11 films from 12 European Union countries represented in Azerbaijan (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom and a joint endeavour from Greece and France). The audience will be given a chance to participate in interactive discussions with the guests after the movies.

European Movie Festivals now, turning into annual events in Azerbaijan, and serve to build and develop cultural links existing between the European Union countries and Azerbaijan, and to contributing to better understanding of the European values through the European movie industry.

Also, just for our readers, we "googled" a little, and found the stories for most of the films here, so you would know which one you want to watch. Read them below, and decide which one you want to go to. We managed to find all stories for all movies, except for "Lake of Crows" and Mild Witchcraft, because those are "short movies". Either way, its better to know what you're going to see, rather than a blind watch. And, yes, in case you're wondering about tickets - reportedly, they're free.



Erratum (2010)
Story: Thirtysomething dad Michal is called back to his hometown and drawn into stories and lives from his past, in Lechki’s sensitively observed, lyrical debut as a director.

The Hell of 63 (2009)
Story: When conditions are right an infamous ice-skating race is held in the north of the Netherlands. The 200 km race must be completed by midnight and everyone who finishes receives a medal. This film is based on the true facts of the fateful day in 1963 when, due to plunging temperatures and rough terrain,thousands of skaters suffered frostbite and shocking injuries. Only a small number would cross the finish-line, but for those who did, it was to be a life changing event!

Nicostratos Le Pelican (2011)
Story: The movie is about a modern social story that follows the relationship between a widower fisherman and his 14th years old son. The premature death of his wife was too tough for him. As a result the father has become estranged from his son and the rest of the village. The appearance of a small pelican who becomes “best friend” of the young boy brings upheaval to the small local community and is crucial to the development of the relationship between the father and the son. Basically it is a deeply human and tender juvenile story that records the life of a Greek teenager, through his friendship with the bird, his relationship with his father (Emir Kusturica) and his first love as well.

Horrid Henry - 3d (2011)
Story: When Henry fails yet again to hand in his homework for the umpteenth time, he has no idea that this will set off a chain of events which will see him forming an unlikely alliance with Moody Margaret, the infuriating girl next door, and his irritating little brother Perfect Peter, outwitting corrupt School Inspectors and toppling an evil Headmaster, winning a talent contest and facing his ultimate nemesis with no way out - all because he is trying to save the very school which he has always professed to hate.

Kill Daddy Good Night (2009)
Story: The story and fate of three families: A Jewish family destroyed by the massacres of the Nazis in Lithuania; the family of the culprit, who flew to America and keeps grotesque family cohesion; the family of Ratz, a social democratic family, dissolving itself miserably in today's Vienna. The condemnation of the last century bundled in these three families showing clearly that one could never escape from its own past.

Almanya: Welcome to Germany (2011)
Story: "Almanya," a rare feel-good movie about Turkish immigrants in Germany which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival Saturday, defies recent political declarations that multiculturalism has failed in Europe. Coming amid an anguished public debate about the place of foreigners in Germany, the debut movie by two Turkish-German sisters delighted filmgoers with its comic and optimistic depiction of immigrants' efforts to integrate in an alien society.

Kuky Returns (2010)
Story: Kuky Returns is the story of a boy six Ondra, who suffers from asthma, and so on “health reasons” must be off his favorite toy – a pink bear kuky. When mom Kukyho throw in the trash, it will work Ondrová fantasy in which experienced Kukyho adventure in an unknown natural world. It’s really just a dream a little boy or kuky actually went to the biggest adventure of his plush life. Kuky Returns is an adventure, a poetic family story in which the main role, however, take the heroes of children’s fantasy worldwhere the only heroes are the puppets.

The 1000-Euro Generation (2009)
Story: In Milan, Matteo is an underemployed physicist, giving the occasional lecture at a university while working at a PR firm where he knows he'll be fired. Without his really trying, two women are attracted to him, a blond and a brunette. The blond is Angelica; they meet smoking on the office rooftop. To his surprise, she has clout in the company and soon has him flying off (with her) to make presentations. The brunette is Beatrice, a new flatmate, hoping for a teaching job in the national service. Angelica dangles a posting with her in Barcelona; Beatrice is simply Beatrice. Will Matteo figure out what he wants - and decide before opportunity passes him by?

Everybody's Famous (2000)
Story: Jean is a family man and factory worker who dreams of becoming a songwriter. Pinning his hopes on his teenage daughter, Marva, he takes her to singing contests in which the awkward and overweight girl struggles to belt out a tune. When Jean is suddenly fired because of cut backs, he is ashamed and even more desperate to have his daughter succeed. In a chance meeting Jean kidnaps the most famous pop star in the country and holds her hostage demanding to be heard by the music industry. Catching the attention of the media and the eyes of the nation, Jean and Marva realize that the show must go on until everyone is famous.

Return of Sergeant Lapins (2010)
Story: The film is set in Riga, where Sergeant Krists Lapiņš returns from an international mission and moves into a remote flat in the city's Āgenskalns district. However, although expecting to live a peaceful life, Krists finds himself involved in several adventures.
