GRENADE explodes at soccer match - PHOTOS

21 September 2012 [13:55] - TODAY.AZ
Soccer fans aren't known for being reserved, but chucking a grenade onto the pitch takes their unruliness to a whole new level.

An unbelievable video has captured the moment a live explosive was thrown onto the pitch during an Asian Champions League quarterfinal match in Isfahan, Iran, yesterday.

The footage shows midfielder, Adel Kolahkaj, from Ian's Sepahan Football Club, spot the object during a break in play.

The player - number 40 - casually bends down to pick it up, not knowing what it was. Then he tosses it to the sidelines like it's a water bottle or an empty can of beer.

But the instant the grenade hits the ground, it blows up. A fiery blaze erupts on the edge of the field, and then thick plumes of smoke spread to cover the patch of grass.

When they realize what happened, stunned players and officials run for cover. Kolahkaj, shocked, covers his ears and bolts, perhaps realising that his good deed could have cost him his hand, had he got rid of the explosive a few seconds later.

The match was briefly halted after the blast.

When the game resumed, Sepahan and rivals Saudi Arabia's al-Ahli finished in a goalless draw.
No one was hurt in the incident, but police are now investigating who threw the explosive onto the field.
