Follow Johnny Depp's footsteps and buy your own pirate island

12 July 2011 [15:06] - TODAY.AZ
Sully Island in the Bristol Channel was used by smugglers in the Middle Ages and is being offered at a cut-price because of the property slump.

It could be a chance to join the list of private island owners such as billionaire Richard Branson and Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp.

The 5.8ha (14.5 acre) island is 400m (1,300ft) off the Glamorgan coastline – but can be accessed on foot via a rocky causeway at low tide. E

state agent Chris Hyde said: ‘Islands in Britain just don’t sell that often. There’s also something romantic about owning an island.

You don’t quite appreciate how captivating it is until you’re here. It offers someone a unique opportunity to own a very special piece of land.’

Notorious pirate Nighthawk – buccaneer Alfredo de Marisco – set up a base there in the 13th century. Evidence has also been discovered of Roman and Viking activity on the island.

The grass, gorse and sandy rock is listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest which means it cannot be built on.
