Monkeys break into Indian hospital

A group of Rhesus Macaque monkeys have figured out how to use the automatic doors of an Indian hospital and have invaded several wards and recovery rooms.

The flagship All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is a state-of the- art facility that can handle any medical emergency, but a horde of escaped red-bottomed rhesus macaque monkeys is something else entirely.

The monkeys have lived on the New Delhi hospital campus undisturbed for decades. They have always roamed freely and without incident.

But now the monkeys have learned how to let themselves inside by operating the motion sensors that control the automatic doors of the hospital.

“I was at the patient recovery room when a nurse cried out that a monkey had sneaked in. The monkey had somehow entered the main corridor and was hiding in the false roof. As soon as the security guard moved away, it jumped inside”, one doctor told the press.

Hospital wards, the neurosurgery department and patient recovery rooms have been compromised by the monkeys’ invasion. They upset the rigid hospital routine by creating bedlam with their frenetic activity. They snatch food, play with the equipment, sometimes bite patients and terrorize the staff.

The hospital has fought fire with fire, so to speak, by engaging two grey langurs (bigger monkeys) to chase off the smaller ones. Although the exact figure of monkeys roaming the hospital is not known, it is estimated there are between 20 and 30 altogether.

This is monkey business at its worst, no?
