120 tonnes of tomatoes were thrown on Wednesday as 40,000 people participated in a tomato fight.
The annual tomato-throwing festival 'La Tomatina' took place in Bunol, Spain. It is traditionally held on the last Wednesday of August.
Town residents and tourists hurled the fruit for one hour, reports The AP.
Five full trucks of ripe tomatoes were unloaded specifically for the food fight. The fruit had to be squashed before hurled, and it was recommended that people wear old clothes and goggles.
The Tourist Office of Spain commented: "Participants have a wonderful time throwing tomatoes at anything that moves."
Portable showers were available so throwers could clean themselves after the food fight, while the streets of Bunol were also cleaned shortly afterwards.
