?ubariz Gurbanli: “Draft resolution on election code adopted by Venice Commission is of no importance”

14 September 2005 [08:50] - TODAY.AZ
The draft resolution on changing the Election Code of Azerbaijan adopted by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe is of no importance.
Deputy executive secretary of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP), deputy of the Milli Mejlis Mubariz Gurbanli told Trend about it.

He noted the country’s Election Code was adopted following the positive opinion of the European experts. «And, second, it is necessary to clear out, whether this resolution has been really adopted by the Venice Commission or any other organization”.

He also added, by introducing any changes to the Election Code the national interests of Azerbaijan are in the foreground. «The official Baku, passing any law, does not take into account the interests of foreigners”.

The co-founder of the “New Policy” block Eldar Namazov noted, adopting of the resolution on changing the Election Code by the Venice Commission was expected. «The Council of Europe, OSCE and a number of other international institutions are displeased with the provisions of the Elections Code of Azerbaijan”, Namazov stated, noting the official Baku did not accept proposals of these organizations on changing the Election Code.

The co-founder of the “Democratic Azerbaijan” block and the chairman of the Civil Solidarity Party Sabir Rustamhanli noted, adopting of the draft resolution is the next pressure on Azerbaijan. “The Azerbaijan’s opposition appealed to the Venice Commission not once in regard to the Election Code. If this structure is interested in transparent elections in Azerbaijan it would have considered the appeals of the opposition long ago”, he stated.
