Farhad Aliyev is arrested - UPDATED

The Ministry of the National Security, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the General Prosecutor's Office released a joint statement were they explained the situation in the country.

In it they stated that ex-speaker Rasul Guliev in a coup with other destructive elements tried to overthrow the government. An investigation showed that Guliev connected with people who were interested in the coup and ready to use their financial capabilities for an armed resistance.

The investigation showed that there was generated a plan according to which they started an agitation program to attract people to the airport and surrounding areas. At the same time they were preparing provocative groups, arming them with the purpose of attacking law enforcement units and causing clashes which would lead to the coup. With this purpose they hided ammunition and explosives en route of the crowd.

Besides that, on October 16 as a result of a preventive special operation an ex-minister of finances Fikret Yusifov was arrested. Yusifov possessed large amount of money which was prepared for the  groups breaking the order. From the ex-minister were withdrawn $100,000 and 60,000 euro.

Yusifov on his own will agreed to testify against Rasul Guliev and his supporters preparing the coup. In his testimony Yusifov informed that in July of 2005, while he was in St. Petersburg he was contacted by Rasul Guliev whom he had known for a longer period. Guliev told him that the financing of the coup is entrusted to the Minister of Economical Development Farhad Aliyev and his supporters.

After that Yusifov has met with Farhad Aliyev in the office of his brother – president of Azpetrol Company Rafig Aliyev and passed him errands of Rasul Guliev. Farhad Aliyev promised him to show full support.

After his return from St. Petersburg, Yusifov one more time spoke to Guliev and told him that Farhad Aliyev agrees to participate.

Entrusted with another Guliev's errand Yusifov met with Farhad Aliyev and passed a final request for help and three millions in the US currency. He also asked Aliyev to be ready to organize all necessary things.
