Ali Hasanov: "Failed visit 'serious blow' to European MP"

12 April 2006 [14:01] - TODAY.AZ
The fact that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) rapporteur Andreas Gross has not been included into a delegation to observe Azerbaijan's repeat parliamentary election on May 13 has caused mixed responses.

Many view this as an indication of some sort of an agreement between the Azerbaijani authorities and the organization, AssA-Irada informs.

The head of the President's Administration socio-political department, Ali Hasanov, said it was undeniable that Gross was biased.

"He has repeatedly exposed his prejudice. This is observed in the Council of Europe as well. His unsuccessful attempts to have sanctions imposed on Azerbaijan were a serious blow to his reputation. We knew long ago that he would be too proud to come to Azerbaijan because he has gone out of his way to hurt the country," Hasanov said.

The official acknowledged that both the Council of Europe and Azerbaijan would benefit from the fact that Gross is not coming to the country. Accordingly, it will be Gross and a group of his allies who are the losing side in these circumstances, he added.
