Azeri rights champion defies 'political prisoners' accord

13 April 2006 [12:19] - TODAY.AZ
The director of the Institute of Peace and Democracy, Leyla Yunus, has sent a list of 83 people she describes as political prisoners to the Council of Europe.

The move follows a joint meeting of the taskforce of rights champions, MPs and representatives of the President’s Office, whereby the participants agreed not to forward such lists to the CE and address the issue within the country for the time being.

Yunus said she was not part of the group and its agreement had no bearing on her.

"I have been working independently for 10 years. I send different reports to international organizations almost twice a week and intend to carry on working as an independent NGO," she has told AssA-Irada.

A number of observers, rights activists and government officials have reportedly accused such champions of pursuing purely financial interest in sending such lists to international organizations.
