30 May 2006 [20:33] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijanis living in different parts of Europe staged a protest action outside the Council of Europe building in Brussels related to the recent violent suppression of Azerbaijani demonstrators in Tabriz, South Azerbaijan.

According to APA, the protesters stated that ethnic Azerbaijanis in Iran were subject to national discrimination, Azerbaijani demonstrators were dispersed violently in Tabriz and other towns and many were killed. The protesters said they could not get in touch with their relatives in Iran after the recent events.

The protesters denounced the Iranian regime pursuing radical nationalist policy under mask of Islam and demanded the official Tehran to open Azerbaijani schools, authorizing social and political organizing of Azerbaijanis, restore freedom of assembly and expression and release political prisoners.

Though Belgian police did not authorize the protest, they did not prevent it.
