Iranian Supreme Supervisory Council meets to confront popular uprisings

A number of the Majlis deputies in Azeri-speaking provinces, representatives from the ministries of Intelligence, Interior, and Guidance, as well as from the state television and radio attended the meeting to discuss measures needed to step up crackdown and to prevent demonstrations from spreading in Azeri cities.

Previously, Mullah Mojtahid Shabestari, the Supreme Leader's representative in East Azerbaijan province had claimed, "The enemy is responsible for instigating people in Azerbaijan and the perpetrators should be dealt with firmly."

The city governor in Tabriz, Mohammad Ail Zabihiyan told the state-run Fars news agency, "Rioters in Tabriz were instigated by foreign countries. These people were trying to use an insulting cartoon published in a government-run paper to draw people into the streets." He added, "They are some rioters who are being pursued and will be arrested shortly."

Such desperate schemes and repeated threats by the clerical regime's leaders to crackdown on the uprisings in Azeris provinces reflect the ruling medieval theocracy's utter failure in dealing with popular uprisings and protests in Iran.
