CE group issues report on Azeri commitment record

13 July 2006 [10:34] - TODAY.AZ
The Council of Europe Ministerial Committee's Ago group in charge of monitoring the commitments of South Caucasus states before the CE on Wednesday issued a report on the outcomes of a recent visit by its representatives to the region.

The assessment on Azerbaijan included both positive and negative feedback, the head of the Azeri delegation at the CE, Agshin Mehdiyev, said.

As AssA-Irada reports, the Ago group welcomed the Azeri government's willingness to cooperate with CE Venice Commission. It did not extensively cover the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh.

The CE representatives visited Azerbaijan June 13-14 to examine Azerbaijan's compliance with its commitments to the organization and met with representatives of political parties, rights defenders and officials. They were also received by President Ilham Aliyev. The resolution passed at PACE's June session endorsed the Azerbaijani mandate. The document indicated, however, that some of the conditions had not been met, including changes to the Election Code and properly ensuring freedom of assembly.
