20 July 2006 [15:03] - TODAY.AZ
"Israel is still conducting raids on the Lebanese territories. At least 300 peoples have been killed, more than one thousand injured and 500 thousand became displaced as the result of the bombings. Despite the tense situation, Azerbaijan's honored consulate is still functioning in Lebanon," Azerbaijani honored consul in Lebanon Nazih Gassub told.

The honored consul said the consulate officers have to escape to the underground office when the bombings start.

Mr. Gassub said all foreign nationals are fleeing from the country. The honored consul said about 35-40 Azerbaijanis have fled to Syria so far.

The consulate encounters difficulties in contacting Azerbaijanis due to the disorder in telecommunication. The people are being evacuated to the northern Lebanon from the south. Foreign nationals, especially, Americans and Europeans are being evacuated through seaport in Cyprus.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Taghizadeh told that the honored consulate is not going to stop functioning.

The UN reports most of the killed in Lebanon are children and women, APA reports.
