GUAM appeals to UN General Assembly

As APA reports quoting the UN official website, the alliance members offered that the conflicts in GUAM countries, obstacles posed by these conflicts to international peace, security and development he discussed at the 61st session of the UN General Assembly.

The appeal reads that the 15-year conflicts in the GUAM countries affected more than 16 million people.

"These conflicts have been overshadowing international peace and security, posing threat to the sovereignty and territories of the three UN member states for 15 years. Millions of people have become refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of these conflicts," the appeal reads.

Bringing the attention to the invasions, obstacles to economic and social development of the region population, GUAM members asked this issue to be discussed at the General Assembly session.

GUAM members- Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine underlined in the appeal that the international mediating mission for the resolution of the conflicts have not given efficient results.

GUAM members appealed to the UN General Assembly last year too.

However, it was not supported by the General Committee of the Assembly. Out of 29 General Committee members only Azerbaijan, Great Britain and U.S voted in favor. Russia, Armenia, Angola, Myanmar and Venezuela voted against and the rest remained neutral.
