OIC chief calls on Muslim countries to encourage tourism to Lebanon

11 September 2006 [15:37] - TODAY.AZ
Muslim countries should encourage tourists to return to Lebanon and help efforts to rebuild the country's economy devastated by Israel's military campaign to uproot Hezbollah, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference said Monday.

OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also repeated condemnation of Israel for its 34-day war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

"We reiterate our condemnation of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and Palestine, which destroyed the economic infrastructures of the two countries, including their tourism installations, in addition to killing and injuring thousands of people and creating utter misery and desolation," he told tourism ministers from Islamic countries meeting in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku.

"I appeal to all the member states to lend generous support to Lebanon and Palestine in order to allow them to overcome the repercussions of the Israeli aggression," he said.
Azerbaijan's president, meanwhile, called on Muslim states to use their strength to contribute to peace and stability in the world.

"The role of the Islamic world in the bringing of peace, security and calm in the region and in the world is very high, and this role is strengthening," Ilham Aliyev told the meeting. "We should try to strengthen the ties uniting the Islamic world and to strengthen our positions." AP
