The Party of European Socialists (PES) group co-chairman, Finnish Parliament Speaker Paavo Lipponen and an accompanying delegation met Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc in the Turkish parliament on Tuesday.

"Mr. Lipponen works with Turkey closely. We thank him today for his assistance extended to Turkey in its EU process," said Arinc.

"In a short time, we will discuss the path Turkey has walked on so far in its EU process and problems that Turkey is experiencing. I hope that Mr. Lipponen's contacts and meetings in Turkey have been helpful," noted Arinc.

Lipponen indicated that PES's current visit to Turkey was designed to evaluate the status quo in Turkey. "Party of European Socialists support Turkey's accession into the EU," told Lipponen.

Paavo Lipponen stressed that they are happy with the reform process in Turkey. "We want to motivate the Turkish parliament further to make new reforms," noted Lipponen.

"The EU and PES are glad about Turkey's decision to contribute troops to peace-keeping force in Lebanon," remarked Lipponen.

Meanwhile, Lipponen and his delegation paid a visit to Turkish Democratic Society Party (DTP) and held a meeting with the party leader Ahmet Turk.

The meeting was closed to press corps.
