COE and Supreme Court organize international conference on the European convention on human rights

The two-day international conference on the European convention on human rights and fundamental freedoms organized by the Azerbaijan Supreme Court and Council of Europe commenced November 13 at the Europe Hotel.

Chairman of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev said that Azerbaijan chose the path of democracy after regaining its independence, carrying out judicial and legal reforms. According to him, the new constitution of Azerbaijan makes protection of human rights and freedoms the main priority of Azerbaijan government. He said Azerbaijan puts a special emphasis on the cooperation with European nations in order to ensure human rights.

He pointed out that after joining the Council of Europe, Azerbaijan acceded to a number of conventions including the European convention on human rights.

CoE secretary general's representative Denis Bribosia said the steps that official Baku takes to strengthen judicial system are very important. According to him, by President Ilham Aliyev's two decrees on judicial and legal system indicates to his interest in protection of human rights and freedoms.
