Prosecutor General meets U.S. Ambassador

Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov met November 15 with U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse, according to the press-service of Azerbaijan General Prosecutor's Office.

Anne Derse said that President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev's visit to the USA in April 2006 opened a new era in the bilateral relations, promoted the positive processes in Azerbaijan, including development of democracy and the work towards protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Answering to the Ambassador's questions on protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Azerbaijan, fighting corruption, human traffic, terrorism, as well as the coming changes in the national legislation and freedom of the press, Garalov gave detailed information on the measures being taken under the guidance of Azerbaijan President Aliyev, as well as successful ongoing reforms.

Garalov also updated her on the important laws adopted, state program on fighting corruption, creation of the internal investigation departments in all law enforcement bodies of the country, ratification of UN and European Conventions, as well as activity of the anti-corruption department under the General Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor General highlighted operations of the Hot Line coordination center, application of the new information technologies, creation of respective databases, as well as U.S. experience in fighting global threats and staff training.

The sides stressed the necessity to step up joint efforts to combat transnational organized crime, terrorism and human traffic. They have also shared their views on prospects of cooperation between the U.S. Department of Justice and the law enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan, including Prosecutor's office.
