26 February 2007 [14:43] - TODAY.AZ
The State Border Service expressed its official protest to Iranian Embassy in Baku and border commissioner on Iranian helicopters' violation of Azerbaijani airspace on February 22, the Service chief, Lieutenant General Elchin Guliyev told.

"A group of five-eight helicopters violated Azerbaijan's airspace. Immediately the border commissioner of Iran was called and protested. Nearly after five minutes military attache of Iranian embassy was informed about the incident. We appealed to military attache to investigate the case and inform us," he said.

Guliyev also stressed that that day SBS official informed Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry of the volation.

"At the present deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov is in Iran. This issue will be raised there," he said.

The chief of SBS refuted the reports that Azerbaijani side has been informed beforehand about possible airspace violations.

"SBS has not received any official information about it. In these cases, Foreign Ministry or border commissioners usually inform," he said.

Guliyev also noted that they prevented transportation of religious-extremist literature. Those books have been confiscated and presented to the State Committee for Religious Communities, APA reports.
