Georgian permanent representative to UN: Kosovo model can not be precedent for South Caucasus conflicts

30 March 2007 [13:24] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia's UN envoy Irakli Alasania in his speech made at the Harvard University and Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy said that the Kosovo settlement is not a precedent. That is why this conflict settlement can not be implemented on the Nagorno Karabakh, Abkhazia and South Ossetia conflicts.

Mr. Alasania told the APA's US bureau despite of insistence of some countries on Georgia's approval of the Kosovo settlement as a model, Georgia even rejected to negotiate on this base. He also said that Georgia's position is supported both by the US, European Union and other international organizations.

Touching on security issues in the South Caucasus, Georgia's UN envoy stressed Azerbaijan's role in supplying Georgia with energy resources in cold winter months. Irakli Alasania appreciated Azerbaijan President's step as "political will." He said that this step by Azerbaijan prevented certain forces inside Georgia to escalate tensions in the country.

Calling Azerbaijan–Georgia mutual relations as a beautiful example of regional cooperation, Irakli Alasania stressed Azerbaijan's support for Georgia in fateful periods. He called Azerbaijan-Georgia cooperation in the UN General Assembly on the draft resolution "Frozen conflicts in the Post Soviet territory" as another example of good mutual relations and said the text of the draft resolution is now being specified.
