President Aliyev visits Georgia

14 May 2007 [12:07] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia and Azerbaijan are expected to sign a border delimitation agreement soon, President Saakashvili told reporters after talks with his visiting Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, in Tbilisi on May 12.

35% of the border between the two countries remains to be agreed upon. Particular contention surrounds the Davit Gareji section of the border, a complex of cave monasteries forming the center-piece of what has become a major tourist attraction.

"Joint working groups will meet soon… Strategic heights should remain under Azerbaijani control, while a complex of monasteries has to remain on Georgian territory… I am sure we will be able to sign [a border delimitation] agreement very soon," Saakashvili said, Civil Georgia reported.

According to AzerTAg, Presidents Aliyev and Saakashvili also officially inaugurated a monument to the late President Heydar Aliyev in Tbilisi on Saturday.
