Int'l conference on Democracy in Transition Societies held in Baku

"Democracy in societies in transition" international conference organized by President's Office, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and State Management Academy started in Gulustan palace.

Vice-president of National Academy, academician Akif Alizade expressed confidence that the conference will be held in the atmosphere of constructive dialogue.

Head of President's Administration, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev made a speech on the theme "Democracy in Azerbaijan: theoretical and practical issues".

He said that freedom of expression and media are the main properties of democracy.

"The theory of democracy is enriched with new ideas in the development of society. World practice shows that democracy reflects national interests. Modern democracy is not only a term but the strategy of formation of new world order. Development of democracy directly depends on the development of economy," he said.

Following this, Russian journalist, editor of Free Thought magazine and editor-in-chief of Russian version of Le Monde Diplomatique journal Vladislav Inozemtsev, director of John Hopkins University Central Asia-Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program Svante E. Cornell, professor of Warsaw University Marek Baranski and others addressed the conference. APA
