"Our relations with Azerbaijan are long-term and strategic and they can not be affected by any events or even by any people".

The due announcement was made by Vasily Istratov, Russia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, commenting on the possible influence of results of presidential racings in Russia on the further development of Azerbaijan-Russia relations.
He said such high level of relations between the two countries was achieved mainly owing to Vladimir Putin and Heydar Aliyev, who restored the grounds of the current relations.
"The bilateral relations are also developing under the new President of Azerbaijan and I am sure that the election of a new President in Russia, carried out in line with the Russian Constitution, will not affect the further development of our bilateral relations", he said.
He said Azerbaijan is not a white spot for Dmitri Medvedev, who is considered the most likely candidate for the post of the President of Russia.
"It is a well known country and I hope that this will influence our relations as the start will be not from the zero point but far more advanced.
He said commenting on the recent restriction of the use of Russian language in Azerbaijan, that this will not cause a problem for bilateral relations. However, he voiced concern over the situation. He even expressed readiness to discuss the issue.
Istratov also commented on the recent standstill in the bilateral relations, explaining it by the forthcoming elections in Russia.
"You see, it is difficult to arrange bilateral visits right before elections. In other words, this is a reality, which has nothing to do with bilateral relations".
