Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan wins UN Habitat prize

02 March 2010 [12:07] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was named on Monday winner of the inaugural prize of the UN Habitat, which was established in honour of slain Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri.
The UN Human Settlement Programme, known as UN Habitat, selected Erdogan for his achievements in "leadership, statesmanship and good governance" when he hosted the international conference on human settlements in the mid-1990s as the mayor of Istanbul.

"When the history of UN Habitat is written, Prime Minister Erdogan's contribution as mayor of Istanbul will not be missed," said UN Habitat executive director Anna Tibaijuka in a message congratulating him on the award.

Tibaijuka said Erdogan would be presented the prize at the World Urban Forum later in March in Rio de Janeiro. UN Habitat is tasked with promoting adequate shelter for all. The prize was named after Hariri, who died in a bomb explosion in 2005 in Beirut.
