The number of unemployed in Istanbul, Turkey's most populous city, reached 753,000 in 2009 marking a 52.7% rise over the previous year, revealed data compiled from TurkStat figures.
The number of unemployed in major cities like Izmir and Ankara also recorded a significant rise: the number of unemployed in Izmir reached 227,000 with a 45.5% year-on-year rise while the number of unemployed in Ankara reached 212,000 with a 17.8% rise over the previous year.
Adana-Mersin region which ranked highest in unemployment rate, in a sub-regional study of TurkStat figures was followed by Sanliurfa-Diyarbakir (18.8%) and Hatay-Kahramanmaras-Osmaniye (18%) regions.
