Some 11 people have been killed and 60 more injured during 41 traffic accidents on Iranian roads and highways on the eve of new Iranian year, Nowruz.
Colonel Hossein Alishahi, the head of the Traffic Control Department, said that the road mishaps occurred on Friday.
Every year, millions of Iranians take holiday trips during Nowruz, the ancient Persian New Year's festival, which commemorates not only the arrival of the New Year, but the beginning of Spring.
Careless driving, such as not paying attention to the road, attempting to overtake when prohibited and excessive speeding were some of the reasons for the accidents, Alishahi said.
According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, road accidents are considered the second biggest cause of mortality after heart disease in Iran.
