Georgia marks 19th anniversary of restoration of its statehood

Today, Georgia marks the 19th anniversary of restoration of its statehood.
March 31, 1991 the national Georgian government under the leadership of Supreme Council Head Zviad Gamsakhurdia held a referendum on state independence and the participants were asked: ‘Do you agree with restoration of Georgia’s statehood on the basis of the Act of Independence dated 26 May 1918 year?’

It was the most significant event in the country’s newest history.

The referendum was attended by 89.3 percent of the country’s voters, of which 98.9 percent voted for the restoration of statehood.

Based on the referendum, Apr.9, 1991 the Georgian Supreme Council announced about the restoration of Georgia’s independence under the Act of Independence dated May 26, 1918.

The boycott of the referendum March 31, 1991 was declared by a ‘National Congress’, which later took an active part in a military coup.

This was the last referendum, held throughout Georgia, including Abkhazia and Samachablo.
