Armenian and Turkish communities expressed their dissatisfaction over U.S. President Obama's statement concerning events in the last days of the Ottoman empire.
During his speech, Obama did not use the "genocide" word, saying "Meds Yeghern" instead, which in armenian means "great tragedy".
Armenian National Committee of America, an advocacy group based in Washington, condemned the “evasive terminology” in Mr. Obama’s statement and called it “yet another disgraceful capitulation to Turkey’s threats.”
The Turkish Coalition of America expressed its dissatisfaction over Obama`s calling it “one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century”, yet forgetting to mention thousands of murdered Muslims.
“What is, however, forgotten and even denied, is the equally tragic loss of even more Muslim lives in this turbulent period of Ottoman history. The suffering of one nation doesn't justify or negate the suffering of others, and all who lost their lives deserve to be remembered on this day of remembrance,” the statement said.
US Azerbaijani community also voiced its protest to US President's views. Diaspora members in New York and Washington joined Turkish-speaking Americans, raised Azerbaijani flag and made statements concerning Armenia`s aggressive policy.
