109 prisoners of Gobustan detention place start hunger strike

05 June 2006 [13:10] - TODAY.AZ
109 life sentenced prisoner of Gobustan detention place have applied to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

As APA reports, the statement sent by prisoners states that, by 1998 (liquidation of death verdict), 128 peoples' punishment has been substituted by life sentence, who had death penalty.

At present, 89 of them are alive. Majority of 89 prisoners are sick and aged. We have applied to state organs, courts, held actions with requirement of substituting our punishment with 15 years imprisonment, but all these efforts remained without any result.

"With demand of our constitution rights we begin hunger strike by June 12 for indefinite term. Our only demand is—substitution of our punishment with 15 years imprisonment. Life sentence prisoners commiting crime by 2000 are also among the action holders."

The application was generally signed by 109 prisoners. Gobustan detention place Chief Sadaget Agayev informs that last week Ombudsman for Human Rights Elmira Suleymanova, Ombudsman's Office and Court Awards Executioin Chief Office associates met with prisoners in the detention place. "In these meetings not any appeal like that was made to leadership of detention place. We have information of massive action generally. On June 12 we shall see if they begin hunger strike."
