Azeri killed after lowering himself by rope into lion's cage

The Interfax agency cited police as saying that in the incident Sunday evening, the man, an Azerbaijan national, climbed the fence to the lion's den area and then began to lower himself by rope.

His hectic movements apparently frightened a lioness, who killed him with a single bite to the neck, the police as said. There was no immediate information about the man's motives.

It was the second such fatality at the Kiev zoo after a 23-year- old cleaning woman mistakenly entered a cage of tigers in March 2005. One of the animals immediately attacked her and broke her neck.
