World Azerbaijanis' Defence Committee appeals to Amnesty International, UNO and CE

18 February 2007 [01:27] - TODAY.AZ
World Azerbaijanis Defence Committee has appealed Amnesty International, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Council of Europe and world media to draw the attention to Iran’s ban on the national language of Southern Azeris.

The appeals say February 21 is marked as Day of Mother Tongue while millions of Azeris were deprived of this right, the Committee told APA.

"30 millions of Azeris have not event a primary school in Iran. Human rights organizations and democratic forces shouldn't be indifferent to the assimilation policy. Azeris fighting for their rights are harassed, threatened, arrested, tortured and even killed."

The appeal also reads that Azeris were detained by Iranian police in order to prevent seminars, meetings, ad other activities planned for February 21.

"We call on you to take a stance on the issue and concern yourselves with the health of detainees," the appeal says.
