Azerbaijani MP supports amendment to "Immigration" law

04 September 2009 [15:49] - TODAY.AZ
The Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Committee supports an amendment to the "Immigration" Law.
"Recently, the flow of immigrants to Azerbaijan has increased specifically from China, Afghanistan and Pakistan has increased," the Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Human Rights Committee Rabiyat Aslanov said in an interview with ruling New Azerbaijan Party's official Web site.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree to apply the "single window" principle to the immigration management in early 2009.

According to official information, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry has registered over 54,000 immigrants. The majority of them are from Georgia, Central Asia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China and Nigeria.

Aslanova believes the main task of the state is to determine status of immigrants.

"Azerbaijan's socio-economic development has drawn the world attention. The increase in immigration is linked with this," she said.

The majority of immigrants are labor immigrants.

"Of course, this matter is regulated in accordance with law. The increase in the flow of immigration necessitates an amendment to the relevant legislation," Aslanova said.
