Armenia faces demographic crisis

24 October 2009 [10:18] - TODAY.AZ
“Armenia is suffering demographic crisis," Armenian demographer Ruben Yesayan said.
"Compared with 2002 results, Armenia has registered a birth-rate growth. But 2002 was a crisis year, so actually the growth is not significant," he said.

According to 1986 results, 81, 200 babies were born in Armenia, in 2002 their number fell to 32 000.

"Decreased marriage rate also brought to a slump in birth-rate,” Yesayan said.

He said population size reduction will be obvious in about 30 years, with mortality rate increasing.

Expressing his agreement with Ruben Yesayan, Demography Department Head at the Armenian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Vanik Babajanyan described the situation as a “demographic pit”.

He said demographic issues in Armenia are on Armenian government’s priority agenda.
