Naturally, the population of megapolis face certain problems in this respect. What steps are being taken to improve water supply system in Baku? When population of the capital city will be provided with uninterrupted water supply?
"Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline is being built to improve water supply in Baku. Relevant organizations and agencies were instructed in December 2002 to study the matter and make proposals,” Azersu OJSC (responsible for water supply nationwide) Spokesperson Agshin Rustamov said.
“Preliminary studies revealed a number of positive aspects of future Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline. First of all, I would like to note that the capacity of water in these sources is more than 15 cubic meters per second and length of the water pipe is more than 250 kilometers,” Rustamov said.
“As to quality of the supplied water, these sources are underground and spring waters that do not require further purification with reagents waters due to chysical and chemical nature. Moreover, this water will be delivered to Baku by gravity with no energy consumption. These sources are renewable and have inexhaustible reserves,” he added.
“On Sept. 2005, relevant authorities instructed to launch construction of Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline with capacity of 5 cubic meters per second. The project is funded by the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan Republic. The government keeps construction of the pipeline in the spotlight.”
“Oguz-Gabala-Baku is quite complex technical project. Suffice it to say that the water supply passes through the 7 regions of Azerbaijan. It will also will pass through mountain slopes, valleys, crossing 12 rivers, 8 motorway and two railways. The construction is carried out with fiberglass pipes with a diameter of 2,000 mm. These pipes are not subject to rust with durable strength,” he noted.
“Management and technical supervision of this project is provided by the German firm CES Consulting Engineers. The pipeline is being built by Turkish-Azerbaijani companies (Turan Hazinedaroglu - Tekser İnşaat Sənayi and Ganja Korpu Tikinti),” Rustamov said.
He said besides construction of Oguz-Gabala-Baku pipeline, extensive work is being carried out in the local system.
“New reservoirs are built and old ones are being overhauled and enlarged, new lines of urban networks are laid and pipes that are unfit for operation are replaced with new ones,’ he said.
“Moreover, bypass and distribution lines between reservoirs in Baku are constructed and capacity of the sewerage network is expanded,” Rustamov added.
He said that the works are underway on schedule and construction of water Oguz-Gabala-Baku is in a final stage.
"Launch of Oguz-Gabala-Baku pipeline will improve water supply in Baku to a great degree,” Rustamov said.
