Kura, Aras Rivers continue to be contaminated: Azerbaijani ecology ministry

Kura, Aras Rivers that cross Azerbaijan continue to be contaminated.
National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources conducted monitoring for the first decade of November to study the level of pollution of the Kura and Aras Rivers and their branches, the ministry said.

Compared with the third decade of October, the flow rate in the Kur River in the first decade of November rose by 96 cbm/sec and made up 242 cbm/sec.

The monitoring revealed that biogenic substances exceed the maximum permissible concentration in the Kura River as a result of pollution of the water with industrial and domestic wastes in Georgia and Armenia.

Phenol pollution and copper compounds exceeds MPC, copper compounds double in the Shikhli-2 area, phenols exceeded MPC by 3 times and copper compounds by 4 times in the Aghstafachay River, phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and 5 times respectively in the Aghstafachay Reservoir.

According to the monitoring, the flow rate in the Araz River, which borders on Armenia, made up 129 cbm/sec. Phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 4 times in Horadiz area of the River, copper compounds and phenols exceeded MPC by 2 and 3 times in Shahseven I, copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 times in Bahmantapa.
