Azerbaijani Press Council appeals to interior minister to ensure fair investigation of imprisoned journalist's case

Azerbaijani Press Council has appealed to Interior Minister Ramil Usubov in connection with imprisoned journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, chairman of the council Aflatun Amashov said.
He said the council had focused attention on the materials concerning the heroin found on Eynulla Fatullayev.

“He has already been transferred to Baku detention facility. Garadagh district police office is carrying out investigation. Taking into account that this issue is in the center of attention of both media and public, I have asked the Interior Minister to ensure objective investigation,” he said.

As regards journalist investigation of the Press Council concerning the case of Eynulla Fatullayev, Amashov said there was no need for it yet.

“The appropriate authority is carrying out the investigation. The council always pays attention to the problem of all imprisoned journalists. We will focus our attention on this issue till the end,” he said.

Editor-in-chief of Gundalik Azerbayjan and Realny Azerbayjan newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev was arrested with charges of insulting Khojaly residents in his series of articles “Karabakh diary” and sentenced to two-and-a-half-year imprisonment.

Nearly 0.223g heroin was found on Eynulla Fatullayev on Dec. 30, 2009.

He faced charges under Article 234 (illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics, psychotropic substances) of the Criminal Code.
