Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, General Prosecutor's Office investigate destruction of cemetery in Gazakh region

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry and General Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigations into destruction of graves at a cemetery in Gizilhajili village of Azerbaijan's Gazakh region, spokesman for Defense Ministry, Lieutenant-Colonel Eldar Sabiroglu said.

“The cemetery is far from the line of contact. The destruction of the graves in this way has perplexed us. Defense Ministry and General Prosecutor’s Office are carrying out investigation. Information will be made public as soon as it ends," he said.

The cemetery in the occupied Gizilhajili village of Gazakh region was reportedly destroyed by Armenians on Jan. 8. Over 30 tombstones were vandalized. Deputy Chief of Gazakh Region Police Office Adalat Sadigov said though the village is under occupation, the cemetery has not been occupied.

“The village cemetery is under our control. The residents of the village bury their relatives there,” he said.
