Number of diabetics increase in southern Azerbaijan

14 April 2010 [11:15] - TODAY.AZ
Number of the diabetics increased in the southern Azerbaijani region of Lankaran (270 kilometers from Baku).
The region registered around 2,500 people with diabetes, more than 200 of which are taken to account in the past three months, Lankaran Region Central Hospital deputy chief physician Abulfat Mammadov told Trend. In late 2009, the number of people with diabetes amounted to 2,247.

Mammadov said almost 90% of diabetic patients are people over 35 years. Currently, about 9 diabetics aged between 1-14 years, the figure is higher by 4 peoples compared to the same period of 2009.

In the first quarter of the year, 14 people died from complications due to diabetes, he added.

If in late 2008, the number of patients with severe diabetes was 498, now the number is close to 600.

According to Lankaran Region Central Hospital Siyasat Gasimov, the flow of negative information leads to an increase in psychological and sociological tensions.

"The factors such as the consumption of food in large quantities, lack of exercise, and hereditary factors play a significant role in spread of the disease. In 2009, the diabetics received blood glucose meters (a device to measure blood sugar), which in turn affects the factor in the detection of the disease. However, three unidentified diabetics fell to one diagnosed," Gasimov added.
