Absence of psychologists in Azerbaijani schools promotes suicides

The recent increase in the facts of suicide among schoolchildren and adolescents presents concerns, said deputy chairman of the committee of the Parliament of Azerbaijan.

"Studies show that it needs to pay more attention to the causes of suicide among children, students and military people," the deputy chairman of the committee on social policy of Azerbaijan Parliament, neurologist Musa Guliyev said..

Over the last three months of this year, twelve schoolchildren and adolescents have committed suicide in Azerbaijan. In 2009, 29 schoolchildren and adolescents and a teenager had committed suicide in Azerbaijan.

According to Guliyev, to prevent suicide among pupils, the teaching staff of schools and parents must pay greater attention.

"I think that our TV channels have a very negative impact on school children and teenagers. Firstly it needs to make a serious control over the demonstration of films with scenes of violence. Of course, here there is also a negative role of the Internet, and we can not apply prohibition in this regard. However, in any case, resolving the issues of psychological tension in other fields is possible," the MP said.

According to him, the absence of psychologists at schools also makes it difficult to prevent the suicide. "Even if the psychologists are present, many of them do not know their tasks and functions. I intend to raise the issue in this regard at the Parliament," said Guliyev.

According to the deputy chairman, the lack of problems in the family is important to address this.

"We need to eliminate the psychological stress within the family and the army. Because young people, located in families, schools, civic life in general in one place, can not adapt to the situation of the army when they are called to military service. Therefore, the level of psychological services should be upgraded," he said.

According to Guliyev, should also reflect and on some psychological moments in the society.

"Undoubtedly, the cause of psychological stress could be a sharp change in some cases, social well-being of individuals. For example, it may happen that a man who worked in a good position, suddenly deprived of higher salary, which has a negative impact both on himself and on his environment, or a businessman suddenly becomes bankrupt, and his children are not prepared to this. Therefore, those committing suicide may be the children of both rich and poor families," said the MP.

According to deputy chairman, all of these points should always be on the focus, under the control of the family, society and state.

"Of course, serious attention should be paid to schools first. It is necessary to approve a psychologist for every school. But I would like every teacher at each school to attend the training of psychologists. Once or twice a week, these teachers should conduct psychology training for the pupils. At this point, the teacher will be able to determine the psychological state of each child, determine what changes have occurred in their behavior," said Guliyev
