Azerbaijan intends to accede to UNESCO's Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan is considering a possibility of acceding to the UNESCO’s Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

The Ministry reports that a range of underwater monuments was found following archaeological surveys on the territory of the country.

“Among them are Bayil castle on the territory of the Baku Bay, ruins of the Mugan city dated back to IX-XIV centuries, anchors of ships in southern part of the Sangi-Muran island, etc. Taking into account the necessity of effective protection of rich underwater legacy, the country is considering accession to the UNESCO Convention,” the Ministry added.
