Taking part in first-ever global celebration of International Mother Earth Day, the office of the UN Department of Public Information (UN DPI) in Azerbaijan and Ecological Department of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) will jointly bring together representatives of governmental and non-governmental sectors’, environmental specialists, and Azerbaijani youth on 22 April 2010, at the Eco-Park of the SOCAR.
The event, which will include speeches by the representatives of the Ecological Department of SOCAR, the UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, aims at acknowledging the necessity of promoting harmony with nature through conserving, protecting and restoring the health and integrity of the Earth's ecosystems.
International Mother Earth Day was officially declared by the General Assembly Resolution dated 22 April 2009, which invites all Member States, the entire United Nations system, regional and sub-regional bodies and non-governmental organizations “to observe and raise awareness of International Mother Earth day, as appropriate”.
The UN General Assembly also recognized that Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which it says, reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit.
The president of the 63rd session the General Assembly Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann said that by proclaiming the International Mother Earth Day, United Nations Member States now had the opportunity to begin laying out a Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth.
Such a Charter must enshrine the right to life for all living things; right to regeneration of the planet’s biocapacity; right to a clean life -- for Mother Earth to live free of contamination and pollution; and the right to harmony and balance among and between all things.
